      <image:title>Residential - The Conjugated Dwelling</image:title>
<image:caption>The search of a new residential typology for Guangzhou | An Experiment for the Application of early GVDMA | Location: Guangzhou, China | Scale: 42,000 SF | Time: 2006 ~ Present The pursuit is an investigation and speculation of historical and current residential typology of the City of Guangzhou (Canton). The early application of GVDMA lead me to discover the essence of residential quality of the city: the separation and combination of different generations of the family. In order to create a system/infrastructure of the residential type, the project introduced a modular system for the flexibility and modifiability of the future dwelling type. Throughout our history, dwelling, the fundamental unit of inhabitation, is a conjugated miniature which embodies the local people's cultural ideologies of household structure, traditional family value, heritage and long-term development. Since China's independence in 1949, high-rise social housings and commercial apartments for the baby-boomer generations have gradually replaced vernacular housing types and occupied broadly in Guang Zhou's (Canton) cityscape. Being lack of indigenous formal characteristics as well as programmatic flexibility, these generic residential apartment buildings designed for nuclear families architecturally disintegrate Cantonese family dwelling traditions and the vernacular cityscape. As Guang Zhou government is demolishing low quality residential buildings in order to re-sculpt the cityscape and the population will face the retirement crisis of the baby-boomer generations fifteen years later; this thesis aims to examine the implementation of the only-child couple dwelling in Guang Zhou's city center. (Under the birth-control plan issued by the Chinese government in 1980, each couple of the baby-boomer generations who lives in cities would be only allowed to have one child. In the coming 30 years, these only-childs will be the main labor resource of the country). This new conjugated dwelling, with its structural adaptability and programmatic flexibility, will not only address and reinforce Cantonese dwelling traditions by providing the independent co-inhabitation space for the three generations of a family; but it will also help to re-form the "quality of place" of a neighborhood by providing community programs. The Conjugated Dwelling will become a new type of architectural entity to evoke the consciousness of architectural heritage and sustainable long-term development of the city.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Institutional - la Galleria Interna</image:title>
<image:caption>The Internal Gallery | Location: Rome, Italy | Scale: 10000 SF | Time: 2004 The site is a strip of old housing settlement developed at the beginning of the 20th century near the station Numidio Quadrato on the metro line A of Rome. Being incoherent with the grid of the surrounding post-war neighborhood, the site is like an urban fence which causes circulation, parking, and abandoned public spaces problems. In order to respect the current residents and their properties, the project is a series of interventions linked by an “internal gallery” that reorganizes and transforms this old strip in a subtle way. Along this semi-public gallery, two new streets, a cinema complex, a public piazza, a neighborhood center, fountain pools and two underground parking garages are proposed to solve the problems and bring public recognition to this strip of pre-war neighborhood. The Internal Gallery is a new type of urban implementation that re-modifies the “old” for the new context.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image Courtesy of CCBC | Scale: 3200 SF | Time: 2010 | Location: New York, U.S.A. | Client: CCBC This is a remodeling project aims to optimize the use of the interior space of the existing church building constructed in 1978. The project scope includes the design of two new offices, one conference room, one toddler room, one kitchen, one administrative staff work area, the sidewalk pavement, as well as the accommodation of the appliances at the second and third floors. Under a limited budget and the constraint of existing conditions, the theme of the design is to formally represent the church as a body of assembly through a series of wood furniture and partitions. By carefully detailing and dimensioning each piece of material with ergonomic module, all furniture and partition units can be built independently. Each unit is composed by pieces of measured material through the detailing of joints and the usage of hardware. They can be connected and assembled in different configurations. The modular strategy allows the church members to build a large portion of the project by themselves and therefore making the project economical. The Project is an architectural representation of the Christian concept the church as a body of assembly. Each person, each group, each unit of the furniture and partition come together to form the body of the church.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image Courtesy of CCBC | Scale: 8500 SF | Time: 2019 | Location: New York, U.S.A. | Property Owner: CCBC As a special dedication to CCBC’s 60th anniversary, this project envisions the church to grow and become more sustainable in the years to come. The project is conceived based on two major themes: 1st, CCBC as a family church; 2nd, CCBC’s vision to urge the members to “Carry the Cross Together”. After a thorough study of the existing church needs and building conditions, the 1st theme is achieved by adding two flexible pastor apartments on top of the existing church building. The 2nd theme is materialized by the façade treatment with the new cross element on the building top. In addition to accommodating the pastors’ families, the two apartments provide flexible layouts for different uses. They become the church’s additional spaces for missionary programs: such as fellowships , Bible study and outreach hosting.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A political construct to dissolve the physical walls and psychological walls between Palestinian and Israeli | Location: Beit Safafa, Israel and Palestine | Scale: 4000 SF | Time: 2005 | Possible Client: The United Nations This project utilizes the existing apartheid wall of the West Bank Barrier to create a community facility that can allow the Israeli and Palestinian residents of Beit Safafa to learn from each other. The goal of the project is to use it as an educational center to allow the two groups to have a common place to learn their history and become respectful to the others. Students of this unique studio project are asked to do independent re-searches on a regions of conflict. The goal of the project is to design a “political construct” which, by its special site location and programmatic strategies, can act as an architectural entity to enhance the understanding between different groups of people. This new building type is “intended to act as a vehicle for teaching, informing, materializing, nurturing the very basic idea of social justice and peace.” My personal concern about the Israel-Palestine conflict had eventually brought me to a site between the Israeli housing settlement Gilo and the Palestinian village Beit Safafa (two miles to the north of Bethlehem). Situated in the middle of the beginning of a ravine, I read the site as a potent place where the land, the horizontal surfaces merge together by the proposed construction as a "Zipper". A wall-like cinema with internet cafe and library is proposed to serve the local Jews and Palestinian children and their parents. The intervention will become an educational facility to enhance the understanding between the two ethnic groups.</image:caption>
